With the increasing usage of artificial intelligence and automation, it is more crucial than ever to pay extra attention to your information privacy, what information you share, how and where.

Lately, have you been bombarded with emails alerting you of the new Privacy Policies? Or have you noticed an increasing number of websites declaring how they collect your information and plan on using it? Thanks to the recent enactment of a General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have been granted a few rights to protect your information from being collected, stored or used.

So, what is this GDPR?

“The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information of individuals within the European Union (EU).”

While it primarily protects European citizens, it impacts all businesses throughout the world with an online presence.

Why should you care?

While it is a blessing on the personal front, it is quite a game-changing regulation, affecting the way you do business. Let’s say you have a contact form on your website through which you collect personal data such as a person’s name, email, and IP address. Or you track the person’s activity through analytics, which could lead back to that person or may “result in a risk for the rights and freedoms of individuals.” If so, then people have the right to ask your company how their personal data is collected and stored, how it’s being used, and request that their personal data be deleted. They can also object to personal data being used for activities such as direct marketing.

“Under GDPR, organizations in breach of GDPR can be fined up to 4% of annual global turnover or €20 Million (whichever is greater). ‘Clouds’ will not be exempt from GDPR enforcement.”

There is no reason to worry, yet.

At Words and Pictures, we have already updated our corporate Privacy Policy to be compliant with GDPR.
