Park Ridge, NJ, June 24, 2016 – Two interns are spending the summer at Words and Pictures Creative Service in Park Ridge, learning about advertising design and marketing. The agency, which has long worked with college-age interns in marketing over the summer months, has expanded its program to include graphic design this year.
Interns Kelsey Lindefjeld of Woodcliff Lake and Rob Huber of Waldwick applied in the spring and were selected from among a dozen candidates.Kelsey will be a senior at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn this fall, majoring in communication design with a focus on graphic design. As Words and Pictures’ first graphic design intern, she is doing design work for some of the agency’s clients, including eblasts and web pages, under the guidance of the agency’s Senior Art Director Dave Gisler. She is especially interested in branding and typography.
“I love getting experience in the real world,” she said recently, sitting at her corner desk in the Words and Pictures studio. “Learning stuff in school is really different from working at a job. It’s great to see how an agency works, from top to bottom.”Rob Huber is an upcoming senior at Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus, majoring in marketing. He is hoping that the internship experience will give him not only experience in his field, but also a working understanding of both digital marketing and social media, both areas he’d like to specialize in. He is creating content for the agency’s own social media posts, with guidance from Engagement Director Ryan Huban.
“Being exposed to a lot of different parts of agency work was the attraction for me,” Rob said. “I like to be challenged and so far it’s been an incredible success. Interning with people who take so much pride in their work is really going to help me when I go out and look for a job after graduation.”
For her part, agency President and Creative Director Rhonda Smith feels it’s important to provide a wide range of experience to interns. “I don’t want them to feel they’re here doing busy work or watching from the sidelines. They should be able to get real work experience and come out at the end of the summer with new skills and knowledge. That’s why we have them sit in on client meetings, talk to different people in our office, take on projects, and make presentations. It’s great practice for the work world.”
